What the capacity results say
PJM reported in July 2026 that its capacity auction procured 138,318 MW of generation resources while continued load growth kept pressure on the supply-and-demand balance. PJM President and CEO David Mills said demand continues to grow faster than electricity supply.
That is not merely a wholesale-market headline. A tight market changes customer priorities, investment decisions, project urgency, and the commercial value of solutions tied to generation, reliability, flexibility, efficiency, and speed-to-power.
Where hiring demand should strengthen
- Power origination and structured transactions: professionals who understand capacity, offtake, risk, counterparties, and long-term contract structures.
- Large-load and data-center sales: business developers who can engage sophisticated customers facing urgent power and reliability constraints.
- Behind-the-meter generation and storage: sellers who can position resilience, economics, project delivery, and grid interaction.
- Utility and grid technology: strategic account leaders across controls, transmission, distribution, demand response, monitoring, and reliability.
- Commercial leadership: executives who can choose markets, build teams, create partnerships, and prioritize the opportunities worth pursuing.
Why the talent is hard to find
The best candidates live at the intersection of technical knowledge, commercial judgment, customer access, and market structure. A person who understands power markets but cannot develop and close business is not enough. Neither is a strong generalist seller who lacks credibility with the technical and regulatory stakeholders shaping the deal.
The supply shortage is not only a reliability problem. It is a growth market for companies with the right commercial team.
